Angostura 1824 is a blend of the finest mature rums, hand-picked by the Master Blender from selected casks. These rums are aged in charred American oak bourbon barrels for a minimum of twelve years and then hand blended and re-casked. Upon the rum's optimum maturity it is hand-drawn, filtered and bottled. As you can imagine this is quite a process, so availability is always pretty limited! In terms of appearance the Rum is of a Dark Copper hue. The nose however almost contradicts, being light, floral and vanilla with just a hint of spice cake. For me though it remains to be driven by those vanilla tones with honey undertones.

How life changes. Angostura Bitters were originally made by a surgeon, Dr Siegert, for his medical practice back in 1824. I doubt he had any inkling that the business would go on to change so radically- not only for the obvious reasons, but also the business would move from Venezuela to Trinidad some 50 years later. They were more renowned for their aromatic bitters until roughly 1940 when a conscious decision to increase their expertise in and production of Rum was taken.
